COVID-19 Update

Music at St. John's Lutheran Schools will continue in some fashion or another during the 2020-21 school year. Teachers and administrators are consulting local health officials, state health departments, and local and national music education organizations for guidance and best practices.

Visual and Performing Arts

St. John's Lutheran School has a rich history of supporting the arts. Students have the opportunity to express their own creativity through daily activities in their respective classrooms, various vocal and instrumental music ensembles, and visual arts.

General Music

Students have the opportunity to participate in an all encompassing general music program beginning as young as Kindergarten. Each student's musical potential will be fully realized as they learn about rhythm, pitch, musical expression, and so much more.

Instrumental Music

St. John's offers an excellent instrumental music education. Students can begin instrumental music as young as third grade. We offer a variety of rehearsals and meeting times from early morning, to pull-outs, to afternoon rehearsals. Students will have the opportunity to perform in scheduled concerts at St. John's, within the community, and in festivals and competitions outside of Bakersfield.

Current instrumental ensemble offerings include:
  • Beginning Band
  • Intermediate Band
  • Advanced Band
  • Beginning Strings
  • Advanced Strings
  • Jazz Band
  • Chamber Music

Vocal Music

Drawing upon the lessons learned in General Music, students will continue to expand their musical abilities through Vocal Music at St. John's. Students in 4th and 5th grades will be studying to eventually join the Saint Singers, our premier vocal ensemble. Students will learn to be competent in solfege, expressive musical phrasing, intonation, and performance.

Current vocal ensemble offerings include:
  • Saint Singers
  • 3rd and 4th grade Choir
  • 5th and 6th grade Choir
